No I’m not talking about sharks. I’m talking about huge mammals the size of school busses! That’s right, Humpback Whales. I feel like one of the most popular question I get asked growing up here is, “are there sharks in the ocean?” Well yes! Of course there are, that’s where they live. But no one really thinks of an even bigger mammal that they could possibly be swimming with, whales.
Around 12,000 Humpback whales migrate to the Hawaiian Islands during the winter time from Alaska to give birth, breed, and to raise their young. That is is about a 6,000 mile journey! They weigh about 30 tons and are about 45 ft long.
The other day we were at a birthday party and watched this adult whale leap out of the ocean about 10 different times breaching his entire body. Everyone stood up and was just amazed at the power and size of this creature. It seriously never gets old.
My husband has a different perspective on these whales. He has an up close and personal relationship with them. Imagine being next to them in a kayak while fishing. Let alone one breaching right next to you. He caught this video on his go pro the other day. Definitely a memory he will always remember! Just wait for it…
If you ever get a chance to come to Hawaii during whale season you will see the magic yourself. Highly recommend bringing a Go Pro to document all of your fun in and out of the water! https://amzn.to/4hxQ7Fo
